Business Situation

The Turner/PCL/Flatiron Joint Venture approached ScanWorks to complete a 3D laser scan of Terminal 2 of San Diego International Airport. The project team contacted ScanWorks after a failed attempt by the low-bid contractor to  provide an Autodesk Revit model of the existing conditions

Technical Response

The ScanWorks field crew quickly mobilized and established a strong presence on-site. Field technicians are not only responsible for full scan coverage but are empowered to take charge of situations to resolve logistics and coordination problems. The Turner/PCL/Flatiron project management team shadowed ScanWorks during the scan process. ScanWorks' professionalism and expertise instilled confidence in the client and highlighted the shortcomings of the previous provider.

Solution

Onsite, ScanWorks collected point cloud data for a 33,000 square foot area comprising of 56 individual scans. The complete on-site scan took one week and traversed through two remote areas. The individual scans were registered together into one compiled scan, then geo-referenced to the Revit model supplied by the client.

In the office, ScanWorks complied a Revit 3D model in approximately 1 month. ScanWorks modeled architectural and structural components including ceilings and floor contours accurate to 1/4". The deliverable also included sizeable mechanical elements such as baggage-handling conveyor, the HVAC system, and environmental and electrical piping over 2” in diameter. Lastly, fine detail was added in the form of support structures, seismic bracing and header steel that supported the room elements.

A final review session with the design team flushed out QA/QC items. Doing so ensured file compatibility, provided for last minute additions and signified final acceptance of the deliverable. ScanWorks supplied the client a raw data overlay on the model in NavisWorks format and a provided a complete photo-documentation as a validation of the 3D geometry.

Benefits

ScanWorks was proud to be able to change the perception of the Turner/PCL/Flatiron team regarding the effectiveness of laser scanning technology. With our industry-leading, unmatched airport experience backing us, ScanWorks saved the Terminal 2 West project from tens of thousands of dollars in delays and empowered the design team with a Revit model from which they can coordinate design efforts with confidence.
